We need connection
I was waiting in the optician's this week when a familiar song started playing. Without realising, spontaneously my foot began tapping to the beat. You know what I mean; it has happened to you.
I was alone, but somehow, I felt connected to the music.
Music gives us connections to the world around us, and our brains soak it up, filling our bodies with emotions and experiences. Tapping our feet is like our brain doing a little happy dance to the patterns and emotions music brings. Wait 'til it happens to you again; it will bring a smile to your face.
We need connection because social bonds are essential for survival, mental health, and overall well-being, influencing everything from stress and resilience to longevity.
COVID has somehow interrupted our social bonds. Many of us used to work in an office interacting with colleagues every day. Now those same people are working from home, hidden away day after day with just a screen for company, without the same human interaction they used to enjoy. We put on a brave face, but that human interaction has been taken from many of us.
Connection satisfies one of our deepest motivational drives: the need to belong. No matter who you are, we all have this need ingrained in our DNA.
Human connection is not optional; it is a fundamental need rooted in biology, psychology, and social evolution. Prioritising meaningful relationships and fostering social bonds is essential for a healthier, more fulfilling life.
So, let me ask you, how are your human connections? Are they good? Are you fulfilled in your relationships? Or do you have a desire for more human connection? If you do, don't suffer in silence. We would love to help you make some new connections.
My family moved from Winchester to Hamworthy 2 years ago. New friends are emerging, but it has taken time. I have realised (with help from my wife) that I need to be proactive in joining new groups. To put myself in the way of people.
Close friends encourage personal growth, remind us of our potential, and help us stay grounded during difficult times, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.
